WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

Management Water resources local

Water For People Honduras makes efforts for safe, permanent and sustained water management, providing technical assistance to municipal technicians and water management boards, to guarantee that each user consumes quality water.

Water For People Honduras is an advocate for strong local water resources management (LWRM). Before working in a community, Water For People – Honduras outlines the watershed to better understand the available water resources and the impact their use will have on surrounding communities. Great emphasis is placed on sanitation and ensuring that communities with homes above the water source have adequate latrines to prevent water contamination. A significant effort is also made to protect the community's water source and to educate community members about the individual impact they have on water quality in their community.

Water For People Honduras is also working with municipalities and communities to achieve legal protection status for land around water sources and water recharge areas. The greatest progress in this area has been achieved in El Negrito, where the municipal government has formed the Microwatershed Purchase Commission (COMIC), which raises funds to purchase land adjacent to drinking water sources in the district and engages in actions of incidence.

Water For People Honduras promotes water conservation and equitable payment for its use by requiring that all water systems they build or rehabilitate include micrometers at the household level. This allows water committees and community members to monitor water usage and establish a usage-based rate structure to maintain the system.
